Who needs an estate plan?

If you have children, own a home, have retirement accounts, or simply want a say in who makes decisions for you if you can't — you need an estate plan. It's not just for the wealthy. It's for anyone who wants to protect their family from confusion, conflict, and unnecessary legal expense.

What's included?

Every family's plan looks a little different, but most estate plans in Iowa include some combination of:

• A Will — names who inherits your property, who serves as guardian for minor children, and who administers your estate.
• A trust — A trust can be used to hold assets for minor beneficiaries, protect loved ones with a disability, provide for pets after you pass, or avoid probate; everyone's needs are different.
• Durable financial Power of Attorney — authorizes someone you trust to manage your finances if you become incapacitated.
• Healthcare Power of Attorney — names someone to make medical decisions on your behalf.
• An advance directive (living will) — documents your wishes for life sustaining measures/care.
